Marc Jacobs Pop – Up Shop Only Accepts Tweets as Payment

Marc Jacobs opened a Daisy fragrance Pop – Up shop in Soho during Fashion Week with a social media twist. This unique shop did not accept money and only accepted social currency in the form of Tweets, Facebook posts and Instagram photos.

The innovative shop was brought in part by the large amount of Social Media love given to Marc Jacobs fragrance Daisy, which has one of the highest engagement levels on Facebook.  Fans of the fragrance often go to great lengths to publish innovative photos, personal drawings and accolades on Social Media and so this shopping experience was a good way to ‘thank’ fans and launch a new Daisy print campaign. Pop – Up shoppers used the Hashtag #MJDaisyChain as payment for Marc Jacobs-branded gifts ranging from perfume, necklaces and purses.

This marketing experiment was also a reflection of  fashion houses like Dior and Kate Spade entry into the Social Media market and finding new and innovative ways to sell their luxury products to a target audience.

The use of Social Media currency shows the ongoing struggle for companies to accurately measure the actual ‘value’ of a Social Media campaign or more specifically the cost of a Tweet, Facebook Like or Instagram photo.

So while companies continue to engage in Social Media campaigns to uncover the actual value of engagement, fans get to benefit from the innovative ways companies are engaging audiences.

Top Five Fragrance Etiquette Tips

I was recently chosen as a featured beauty expert to give fragrance etiquette for Fragrance.net and so as my thoughts are centered on fragrance and the power it gives one to establish a powerful personal brand I wanted to share some additional tips to keep you fragrance savvy.

1. Know your scent.

Fragrances are packaged beautifully but do you know what is in the bottle and more importantly what is the difference between an Eau de Parfum and Eau de Cologne? Fragrances are labeled by the amount of perfume oils in a solvent (usually alcohol). More perfume oil means less alcohol and a longer lasting fragrance and a higher price tag.

  • Eau de Parfum contains 20 percent aromatic compounds and is the strongest fragrance option
  • Eau de Toilette is about 10 percent fragrance
  • Eau de Cologne holds 2 to 5 percent fragrance.

2. Don’t overdo fragrance in the office.

Scents can be disruptive in the office and a coworker may be allergic to your fragrance, and some offices even have a fragrance-free environment.  So if your scent seems strong to you it probably is even stronger to everyone else and it is time to use less scent.

3. Place fragrance to the best places on your body. 

Body chemistry can change a scent; so it will smell differently on your skin versus your clothes. The best place to apply fragrance is on pressure points including wrists, inside elbows and behind the knees helping the fragrance travel up all day.

4. Know the appropriate season.

Take into consideration the season your will be wearing the fragrance.  Intense scents like Orientals and Woody notes go well in fall/winter and light scents like Floral and Citrus scents pair well with spring and summer. 

5. Be delicate.

Never rub fragrance on your skin. Rubbing breaks down the scent and compromises the fragrance. The key is to spritz the area of the skin for a longer lasting scent.

Bonus Idea: Score a sample. 

Just because a scent smells great on your friend doesn’t mean it will smell good on you.  Get a sample of a scent before you buy so you can see if it works with your own chemistry and don’t forget to ask your friends opinion.

Flower Power continues to makes statements in the world of fashion and beauty.

In fact, florals continue to trend big and are popping up in new and innovative ways.  And personally I couldn’t be happier to see a floral theme in items I can use everyday.

The top designer who is already known for taking the world of fashion, accessories and fragrance over with his lines: Marc by Marc Jacobs, Louis Vuitton, a popular accessory collection, and a line of a fragrances  (of which Daisy is my favorite) is now taking poised to take over the beauty business. This launch follows in the footsteps of other designer beauty collaborations such as Jason Wu for Lancome.

His new line contains 120 pieces of cosmetics featuring foundation, concealer, lip gel, eyeliner, lipsticks, shadow palettes and polishes.

Black lacquer packaging, bold colors and innovative names like Ro(cocoa), Have We Met and Seduce me is complimented by an  innovative brand motto of “Smart Complexion, Blacquer, Hi-Per Color and Boy Tested, Girl Approved.”

Personally, I am looking forward to the two types of lipsticks in the line. The Lovemarc Lip Gel is a Vanilla scented gel lipstick, infused with pigments and optical volumizers to make the color long-lasting; while the Plumping Lip Vinyl contains champagne grapes, mint, oils and SPF 18.

And, for those more adventurous, the Hi-Shine Lacquer is to give a plasticized wet shine made to look as though you applied 30 coats of polish to you nails.

So while the bold colors are not for those who love a natural look, the line can certainly make you the life of any party.

Repetto launches a signature fragrance

Rejoice, the legendary Parisian ballet shoes and flats line Repetto has just launched a signature fragrance.

The new fragrance, called Repetto, promises to be as iconic as the lines signature ballet slippers which debuted in 1947 and gained worldwide fame when actress Brigitte Bardot asked for her own pair of ballet flats to be worn for casual use in 1956.
Primarily scented with a powdery-musky rose, Repetto’s notes of cherry blossoms and pear juice is bright and optimistic coupled with essence of rose, orange blossom, soft vanilla and amber-wood. Delicate and warm the scent is created to be memorable like the perfect dance of a ballerina and to envelop the wearer like a delicate satin ribbon.
Today, Repetto still creates ballet essentials and in my opinion ‘the ultimate’ ballet flat developed for the first ballet shoes which is a”cousu-retourné” technique using a stitch and return method. You can even purchase the  ‘Cendrillon’ ballerina which was created especially for and dedicated to Brigitte Bardot.
While the line has many beautiful options, I always have a pair of the Ballerina Bolchoi in black, which remind me of my early days as a child in ballet class.
