Spring 2014 Beauty Trends

Casual Buns and Low Ponytails

Rejoice the low Ponytail is back in all forms: messy, sleek, wavy and everything in between.  Seen at the Zang Toi, Honor and Jason Wu shows this timeless classic is now ready to gain the respect it deserves and women everywhere can rejoice at the simplicity of the look.

Orange Lips

Orange is the next big color and it showed up on the runways on lips in electric hues as spotted at Rag and Bone, DKNY and at Dennis Basso.

No Makeup

Many designers went so beauty basic the makeup wasn’t there.  To achieve this look you just need some moisturizer and concealer, a dab of blush and a touch of liner. I usually think of this look as the weekend brunch look and I don’t feel it is appropriate for the office but designers like Alexander Wang and Proenza Schouler make a good point to return to basic beauty.

Metallic Eyes

Glitter and shimmer is all the rage for Spring 2014.  Once reserved for the tween-set, metallics are all grown up and can be used as a primary shade on the eyes or as an accent for those less bold. Charlotte Ronson, Carmen Marc Volvo and Jenny Packham

White Nails

Simple white nails are the hottest thing for Spring; and it doesn’t matter if they are matte, shiny, or glossy.  Just think White and your nails will be on trend or ready for nail art designs that are becoming the rage at Kate Spade and Nanette Lepore.

Brown Lips

Brown is back and stronger than ever as seen at Derek Lam and Chris Benz. While the look is reminiscent of a Grunge look this lighter shade is more now and really appropriate for this fall season.

Moon Manicures

The Moon Manicure continues into spring as a major accessory. Now evolving into multiple shades and colors from humble origins on the Ruffian Runway, and Lela Rose shows.

I plan on wearing the Ruffian Moon Manicure now for fall. What trend will you be ready to wear for Spring?  Or is there a trend that you will be wearing now?

Ballet Chic at Zang Toi for Spring 2014

Zang Toi for Spring 2014 created his own beautiful ‘Ballet Chic’ aesthetic for Spring 2014.

Sitting close to the front row, those of us in attendance got amazed by the elegant start of the show when the American Ballet Theatre’s Principal Dancer Cory Stearns opened the show with a brief but beautiful ballet, setting a theme of classical ballet and fashion.

The Ballet Chic look looks like it will be a big trend for Spring 2014, and is characterized by hues of pale blue, ballet slipper-pink, navy and black.

Characterized by the fluid movement in the clothes, this ballet look is accented by delicate ruffles, the light and airy look is crafted from Silks, Organza and daytime Cashmere.

Ballet

Runway hair shined with a sophisticated take on the classic ballerina chignon and resulted in a simple elegance. While classic ballet hair is traditionally pulled back, this look contained romantic waves on the side and an oversized low chignon  to create a modern look.  Makeup was simply with glowing skin and a little blush on the cheek.

Black matte leggins are a definite must and should be in every girls closet along with a pair of suede booties or over the knee boots for spring and also for fall 2013.  So while in New York City to cover the shows at New York Fashion Week I stocked up on my own personal ‘must have list’ for fall and picked up my own pair of over the knee boots by Stuart Weitzman.

zang_toi_trio_0813_450Trending big all over the tents for spring is nail lacquer as necessary accessory, and as Zang Toi is following in the steps of many design houses like Ruffian and Marc Jacobs who launched their own lines.  Models wore the dark noir “Black Swan” nail color on the runway; which is part of a limited edition trio of polishes from Zoya and  includes Ballet Babe – a flowing pink, Boy Toi – a delicate blue cream and Black Swan a deep black.

What is your ‘must have item’ for spring that you can also wear for fall 2013?

Ruffian launches a brand new Lacquer Line with Birchbox

Ruffian, the design house known to popularize the Moon Manicure, has launched the line’s first lacquer collection with Birchbox just in time for the New York Fashion Week Spring 2014 shows.

Ruffian is known being innovative with accessories, right down to their custom created nail art in recent shows, and the popularity of their nail designs helped launch their first ever nail lacquer collection.

I recently reported on Ruffian’s snakeskin nails which were part of a brilliant Goth-Sherlock Holmes inspired Fall 2013 collection at New York Fashion Week and it looks like the designing duo wants to continue their beauty accessory success.

This line contains two collections.  The Crowdsourced Collection, which borrows its name from the tech world, contains three colors handpicked from the designers’ Facebook followers. Shades include “Hedge Fund,” a sophisticated olive oil shade of green mixed with a golden shimmer, “Delirium,” a bright, saturated purple with an eye-popping metallic finish and “Fox Hunt,” a rich orange with a touch of shimmer.  And while the colors are spot on for the fall 2013 season the lacquers are made to last with a chip-resistant, high-gloss formula.

The second collection is called the Classics containing the already famous “Ruffian Red” brick hue that fashionistas swear by, with two more of their well-known shades: a creamy neutral beige named “Ruffian Naked” and a smoky black “Cire Noir.”

Refinery 29 has reported models in the Ruffian Spring 2014 show at New York Fashion Week will be wearing the Crowdsourced Collection, so if you want to be ahead of the beauty trends you can wear these shades now to show you are in the beauty know.

Ruffian Snakeskin Nails and Victorian Goth for fall 2013 #NYFW

Ruffian for Fall 2013 at New York Fashion Week showed a “Just Bitten” beauty look with black, snakeskin-like nails topped with a Cameo and Tulle.

Fitted jackets, A-line skirts, cropped pants all based in shades of black were complimented by rich Byzantine colors and tactile textures, all calling to a modern woman with a busy schedule and a crush on Benedict Cumberbatch as the modern Sherlock Holmes.

Ruffian is becoming know for styling creative nail designs for runway shows as seen with the red and violet velvet nails that created a stir and lead Ruffian to create their own nail polish with Birchbox.  So Fall  2013 was no exception with MAC lead manicurist Keri Blair created a  “Victorian Gothic Veiled Nail” with a lengthy almond shape inspired by Barbara Streisand. This look was created by placing MAC Nail Lacquer in Nightfall, a pearlized grey, on the underside; while the top side is covered with blackest-black Nocturnelle.

Next, a rough-cut thin veil of black tulle is placed on top and a top coat is placed to secure the tulle. The veil is then trimmed to size, allowing the edges to show and a mini flat-back cameo is placed along with another layer of tulle for a “bride-in-mourning” look.

The runway fashion highlighted simple of hip-skimming jackets for day and longer lengths for night paired with iridescent reptile prints made for a series of luxurious and wearable looks including leather and velvet. Accessories that will be trending big this fall from the show include ruffles, chokers, bows, collars and other neckline embellishments, but my favorite accessory is a funky Sherlock Holmes inspired hat that promises to trend as a big attention getter and another Sherlock Holmes reference.

Ruffian fall proves black is anything but basic and with an interesting mix of fabrics, textures and unique fashion and beauty accessories.

The two trends that inspired me most when I attended the show, and that I will be rocking this fall, will be the black nails and Sherlock hat.
